Linux shells
SSH into a box that is not your laptop. New eon shells include irssi, weechat, BitchX, znc, senpai, screen, tmux, alpine, WireGuard (wg), stunnel — plus you@kire.net mail and Eggdrop / Limnoria when you want a bot.
IRCD Shells
Your own IRC server. Dedicated IPv4 and IPv6 so you can bind 6667 and 7000. Free domain hosting and DDoS protection included.
Eggdrop hosting
Most of the business. Self-managed on a shell, or a managed bot with no config. Channel still there after you sleep.
ZNC
Modern bouncer. Web panel, playback, stays on the network when the laptop lid closes.
psyBNC
The old one. Still requested. Still runs. If you know why you want it, you do not need a paragraph.
Vanity vhosts
Real IPv4 and IPv6 with amusing PTRs. Show up as loves.lamer.net, not dhcp-pool-3.isp.example.

You can run IRC off a closet Pi, a forgotten VPS, or a laptop that is not allowed to sleep. Plenty of people do, until they do not.
Home IP is not a hosting plan
Power blips, ISP “maintenance”, roommate unplugging the switch. A shell is supposed to outlive your session.
Someone will flood you
Channel takeovers still happen. So do packet cannons aimed at whoever is opped. We sit in front of that.
You want a hostname that is not your ISP
identd that answers. PTR that does not dox the cable modem. The boring infrastructure IRC still quietly requires.
Not babysitting crontabs at 3am
Disks die. Kernels want patching. You wanted a bot in #chan, not a second unpaid sysadmin job.
